A new AI Local Report found the "affordable" #1 matched the "best" #1 in only 28% of local markets, and BrightLocal says 46% of small businesses haven't checked or don't know if they show up in AI. A free way to test the prompts that bring cheap AI traffic.

Cheap AI traffic for a local business often starts with one word in the customer's question: affordable. Two October studies show why that word matters. AI Syndicate's AI Local Report for October 2026 put 21,600 questions to 12 AI assistants across 600 US local markets and found the "affordable" #1 matched the "best" #1 in just 28% of markets. And BrightLocal's Small Business Marketing Report chapter on AI visibility, published October 21, says 46% of small business owners haven't checked or don't know whether their business appears in AI results.
AI Syndicate asked each assistant three ways: who is best, who to recommend to someone who needs one, and who is affordable nearby. Only 22% of markets had the same #1 across all three wordings. The top pick also moved fast: in the 245 markets measured in both September and October, the #1 business changed in 52% of them. Most of the evidence came from other sites, with about 280 review sites, directories and platforms taking 54% of citations, while websites identified as the ranked business's own took 11%.

BrightLocal's survey points at the gap on the business side. 54% of owners have checked and feel confident they appear in AI results, 21% think they probably do but haven't checked, and 65% say they're actively working on AI visibility. Yet only 35% say they keep an active Google Business Profile, even though 85% have one. BrightLocal also notes that the same prompt on the same AI tool doesn't always return the same businesses, so a single search for your own name proves very little.

If you want to go deeper on the Google side, our sister agency BuyAISearch broke down what ads in AI Mode mean for follow-up questions, and ChatGPTKing explains why deeper service pages tend to beat a homepage in ChatGPT answers.

Black hat SEO tries to trick ranking systems with things like hidden text, link schemes, cloaking, fake reviews or bot traffic. It can work briefly, and it can get a site penalized or quietly ignored.
