Cheap AI traffic before ChatGPT ads: ads are now in 89 countries, but they don't buy you the answer

ChatGPT Ads now run in 89 countries, with a wider ad card and multi-image ads open to every advertiser. OpenAI says ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers, so here's the free work that gets you cheap AI traffic first, and how to test ads without wasting money.

If you want cheap AI traffic, the newest paid option deserves a careful look before you spend on it. OpenAI said on October 21 that ChatGPT Ads now run in 89 countries and that more than 100,000 advertisers have used them. On October 30, Search Engine Roundtable reported a wider standard ad card on desktop and multi-image ads opening to all advertisers in beta.

What the ad is, and what it isn't

OpenAI is clear on one point: ads are labeled, kept separate from ChatGPT's answers, and "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides." Ads only show on the Free and Go plans. So an ad can put you under a conversation, but it won't get you named inside the answer. Anyone selling "guaranteed ChatGPT placement" through ads is selling something OpenAI says doesn't exist.

The free work comes first

The cheapest AI traffic is the kind you don't pay for per click. These steps cost nothing and help both your organic answers and any ad you run later:

  1. Check yoursite.com/robots.txt and make sure OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked. OpenAI's [ad creation guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001212-creating-ads-for-chatgpt-ads) also says ad landing pages must not block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot.
  2. Write one plain page per service or product that answers the questions customers actually ask, with prices and service area where you can.
  3. Keep your Google Business Profile and main listings consistent with your site.
  4. Ask ChatGPT the questions a customer would ask, without naming your business, and note whether you show up and whether the details are right.

That second step matters more than it used to. Our sister agency ChatGPTKing looked at how ChatGPT answers increasingly point to specific inner pages rather than homepages, so a focused page does double duty.

If you do test ads, test small

OpenAI's own guide gives the rules for a cheap, honest test: link each ad to the most relevant page instead of your homepage, add UTM tags to the destination URL so you can see the visits in your analytics, and write clear, benefit-focused copy rather than a catchy line. Multi-image ads need 4 to 6 square images and all of them go to one URL. Set a small budget you're fine losing, run it against the organic baseline from step 4, and decide with your own numbers.

White hat vs black hat SEO, explained simply

White hat SEO

White hat SEO follows search engine and AI platform guidelines: useful content, honest markup, open crawl access and links people choose to give.

Black hat SEO

Black hat SEO tries to trick ranking systems with things like hidden text, link schemes, cloaking, fake reviews or bot traffic. It can work briefly, and it can get a site penalized or quietly ignored.

We're not black hat: no spam, no hacks, nothing that risks penalties. LLM search is still growing, and we keep up with the latest legit techniques. Stay tuned to our blog for free tips. Read the blog →
