Cheap AI traffic from Google Maps: the free Business Profile AI messaging agent is reaching more businesses

Google is offering its free AI messaging agent on Business Profiles to more businesses. It can turn Search and Maps visits into bookings at no cost, but it only answers as well as your profile does. A free half-hour checklist before you say yes.

Cheap AI traffic doesn't get much cheaper than free. Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 29 that Google is rolling out its AI-powered messaging pilot to more Google Business Profiles. Customers who find you in Search or Maps can text you from their phone's own messaging app, and an AI agent answers routine questions, such as today's specials or whether Saturday is open, then hands anything it can't answer back to you. Google describes it as free.

What we know about the pilot

Owners are spotting it as a red dot on Messages in their profile, and Mike Blumenthal shared an early-access email framed around restaurants. TWIMCO's November 1 review of the pilot says Google's help pages currently limit it to restaurants, beauty services and vehicle services businesses in the US, UK, France and Germany, and that it needs a separate business review before going live. In the US, TWIMCO says that review asks for an EIN, a working business email, a website or official social profile, and public privacy and terms pages.

There's one big catch. The agent only works for customers whose phone and carrier support RCS messaging. Everyone else's texts go straight to your phone as normal, so someone still has to answer them. And because the agent reads from your profile, wrong hours or an old menu become wrong answers sent in your name.

A free half-hour checklist before you accept

  1. Update hours, holiday hours, services and booking details on your Business Profile, since that's what the agent answers from.
  2. Make sure your website says the same things in plain text, so Google isn't choosing between two different answers.
  3. Write down the questions you get most often by phone and check the answers are actually on your profile or site.
  4. Name one person who watches handed-off chats, and decide how fast they'll reply. A missed handoff is a lost booking.
  5. Read the first week of conversations the agent handled and fix any profile detail it got wrong.

This is the same idea behind most cheap AI traffic: the AI tools that answer for you only repeat what they can find. Our sister agency BuyAISearch recently explained why blocking AI training and appearing in AI answers are two separate choices, which is worth reading before you change anything in robots.txt.

White hat vs black hat SEO, explained simply

White hat SEO

White hat SEO follows search engine and AI platform guidelines: useful content, honest markup, open crawl access and links people choose to give.

Black hat SEO

Black hat SEO tries to trick ranking systems with things like hidden text, link schemes, cloaking, fake reviews or bot traffic. It can work briefly, and it can get a site penalized or quietly ignored.

We're not black hat: no spam, no hacks, nothing that risks penalties. LLM search is still growing, and we keep up with the latest legit techniques. Stay tuned to our blog for free tips. Read the blog →
