Cheap AI traffic checks: why one blended AI visibility score can hide where you're invisible

An Oct 20 benchmark found ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Perplexity rarely agree on who to recommend. How a small business can check AI visibility engine by engine without paying for a single blended score.

Cheap AI traffic starts with knowing which assistant actually mentions you, and a new benchmark says one blended score won't tell you. On October 20, Crackle PR published its Q4 2026 AI Visibility Index, which asked ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Perplexity the same 25 questions five times each and compared the shortlists they returned.

What the benchmark found

When the same engine answered a question again, its top-five shortlist overlapped about 43% with the previous answer. Across different engines, overlap fell to about 17%. One agency in the study scored 22.0 out of 100 on Claude and 0.7 on ChatGPT, so an averaged score put it in the middle of the pack while it barely registered on one assistant.

Keep the limits in mind. The study covered one industry (B2B tech PR), used API access with web search on rather than the consumer apps, and was produced by an agency that appears in its own data, which it disclosed. Treat it as directional. The practical lesson still holds for any small business: a single AI visibility number can say you are winning while the assistant your customers use never names you.

A low-cost way to check engine by engine

  1. Write five questions a real customer would ask before buying from you, in their words, not your keywords.
  2. Ask each question in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, and record whether you are named and which page is cited.
  3. Repeat the same questions a second time. One answer is a weak sample when repeat answers only overlap about 43%.
  4. Keep one row per engine in a sheet. Do not average them; fix the engine where you are missing first.
  5. If you pay for a visibility tool, ask the vendor which engines it covers and how it weights them.

When an engine skips you, the fix is usually on pages you control. Our sister agency's AI search optimization checklist covers the crawl and structure basics, and ChatGPTKing has a practical piece on making your pages easy for an assistant to quote.

White hat vs black hat SEO, explained simply

White hat SEO

White hat SEO follows search engine and AI platform guidelines: useful content, honest markup, open crawl access and links people choose to give.

Black hat SEO

Black hat SEO tries to trick ranking systems with things like hidden text, link schemes, cloaking, fake reviews or bot traffic. It can work briefly, and it can get a site penalized or quietly ignored.

We're not black hat: no spam, no hacks, nothing that risks penalties. LLM search is still growing, and we keep up with the latest legit techniques. Stay tuned to our blog for free tips. Read the blog →
